Peppermint Essential Oil Cools Hot Austin Woman

Peppermint Essential Oil Cools Hot Austin Woman

keeping cool with peppermint essential oil

Peppermint is cool. And when you live in Texas, and late July rolls around, you look for anything cool you can get your hands on.

This morning I need to wash lettuce so I turned the tap to the cold setting to put a few inches of water into the sink for swishing. When I tested it, the water was not even close to cold; in fact, it was warm enough for a bath!

[Aside: if you’ve ever been to Austin, you’ve surely seen Barton Springs or some other natural spring water bubbling up around here. That water is cold; 68 – 71 degrees year round! But the well here on our property west of town reaches 650 ft. and that groundwater is warm, y’all! The earth’s rocks and the deep aquifers’ waters are tepid at best!]

Even swimming pools are warm these days. So how do you ever get cool besides jumping into a spring? You swig some iced peppermint water, for starts.

Peppermint Essential Oil In Your Water Bottle*

I love that first bracing cold swig. It literally feels cold in your mouth, and immediately wakes you up. The phytochemical make-up of peppermint essential oil causes the skin to feel cool then warm, just like when a health practitioner alternates using cold packs then heat packs to sooth discomfort of muscles.

That physical sensation of coolness is for real when you’re using plant oil that comes from a living peppermint plant. There’s no mistaking it.

Now, I don’t know exactly why Peppermint feels so good when you have a tension headache or are feeling cloudy, funky or stressed. But it’s true; when you rub some peppermint oil on your forehead or the back of your neck, that tingly feeling feels amazing. Not only is the ever-present sensation comforting, it even distracts you from any discomfort you felt before.

Pliny liked peppermint oil

Peppermint Essential Oil Exhilarates Your Body, Mind and Spirit

And grogginess? It’s gone! Pliny liked peppermint oil. (Say that five times fast.)

[Tweet “Peppermint oil’s mental benefits have been proven and praised for centuries.”]

The purifying and stimulating fragrance opens the airways and enhances circulation to the brain. If your attention is lagging, your focus is off, and your motor skills aren’t at their peak; you can rub some peppermint oil onto your temples and behind the ears to enhance alertness. My late afternoon running-around is perkier with peppermint oil in the car.

I mentioned the physical sensation of peppermint oils in your drinking water and applied topically, but here’s a fact I never knew before: Peppermint oil boosts your workouts, too! According to this study…

The results were actually pretty surprising. You might expect a boost, but the extent that peppermint consumption improved performance was considerable. The oil improved exercise performance, respiratory function, blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory gas exchange. It also reduced resting blood pressure and heart rate. The amount of total work performed by the test subjects was increased by a whopping 51%, including an increase in the time to exhaustion of about 25%. So not only did the subjects go for a quarter longer than they did without the peppermint oil, their work rate per unit time was higher too. In other words, they went faster for longer.

Those are the main ways I use peppermint oil in our household, but do your research. There are dozens of other applications and benefits:

  • Relieves sore muscles
  • Aids healthy digestion
  • Suppresses your appetite, giving you the sensation of fullness
  • Helps memory and concentration
  • Lowers acidity in the body
  • Maintains healthy respiratory function

Hot summer months are a great time to sample some uber-cooling and awakening peppermint oil by Young Living.

*By the way, I’m only talking about water made from Young Living Peppermint Oil. The Seed To Seal™ Guarantee assures 100% purity, so I feel good about ingesting it. I wouldn’t swig water with any other brand’s oil. I just wouldn’t take the chance. And be sure to drink out of a glass container. Plastic’s no good with ingested oils.

The Triple Threat Essential Oils Sunburn Therapy

The Triple Threat Essential Oils Sunburn Therapy

Too much of a good thing = SunburnEveryone knows how it feels to get a little too much exposure to the sun. This past weekend, we discovered a wonderful repertoire for dealing with after-sun “Ouch.”

See, my daughter Katie loves the outdoors. She’s been pining for the heat of Texas for months, and this weekend she got her fill… resulting in a sunburn.

Our friend Dave took us out on his boat on Saturday to enjoy Lake Travis. After several long years of draught the lake is back up to normal levels. It was a perfect day full of sun, music, fishing and swimming in a quiet cove. The perfect anecdote to months of too much indoors… except for the sunburn.

We didn’t know it was all that bad until later that day when Katie bared her red skin inside later that afternoon. It didn’t look that bad while we were on the Lake! (Isn’t that always the case?)

Now that we have plenty of oils in the house for whatever may come, we consulted some trusty resources and Googled some recipes for soothing sunburn by natural means. Thanks to the Everyday Oils Kit and the accumulation of other necessary singles and blends, we had everything oily we needed. The usual recommendation is to use lavender and peppermint to cool the redness and heat, which we did.

Sunburn Spritzer

1. Black Tea, Lavender, and Peppermint Essential Oils Spritzer

A little more digging unearthed the remedy of applying black tea to the sunburn, so Katie made some strong black tea and added both peppermint and lavender. She set to spritzing every few minutes, and continued to look for more solutions.

2.  Aloe Vera

I know real aloe straight from the plant is best, however the aloe plant on my back porch was nearly destroyed in last spring’s storm. I doubted we had enough of the natural gooey substance to treat her whole body. Yesterday morning after church we stopped at Whole foods and picked up a gel containing Aloe Vera. I checked the labels and determined the one that contains the most pure and natural aloe. We bought the best quality bottled Aloe Vera and Katie alternated it with the black tea mixture.

3. Finally, Coconut Oil

Last night, exactly 24 hours after realizing the extent of her sunburn, she added some coconut oil (spiked with Lavender) to the rotation, and finally felt like she was winning the sunburn battle.

smart dogs stay in the shadeTry this three-part rotation yourself if you ever have too much fun in the sun. Not only will you cool and calm the soreness and redness of your skin; you may protect your skin from peeling, too.

Of course the best way to deal with the sun is to limit your exposure (Dave’s puppy Maxine knew better, and took a siesta under the captain’s chair!) and to wear a natural sunscreen… Next time.

every day oils for every day solutions

It’s a good idea to have some of these most elemental essential oils on hand for every day emergencies like sunburn and a whole host of other things. The Everyday Oils kit is a wonderful way to stock up and make sure you have what you need handy. Please contact me for a quick chat about all they can do, and how to get a kit of your own.

The Clean Garage Blueprint For Busy Home Business Owners

July 9, 2015 by jennifer mcgahan Leave a Comment

The Clean Garage Blueprint For Busy Home Business Owners

I love a clean garage. I just don’t make the time to clean ours very often.

The clean garage Blueprint for people who work from home

This is ironic, because I value good health, and I’ve found the healthiest way to clean your garage is to simply clean it more often. For those of you who, like me, spend most of my time at home yet only clean the garage about once per year, it’s quite the project. On top of that, it can make you sick and sore. More about that later.

Everyone thinks that people who have a home business or who frequently work at home have all sorts of extra time that other people don’t. While it’s true that we don’t have a schedule set by someone else, we still keep a schedule, however flexible. Like everyone else, free time is usually filled with things we actually like to do.

Cleaning the garage doesn’t fall too high up on my list. If I have extra wiggle room, I’m probably carting the kids to their various activities, reading, or cooking a nice dinner. So here are some tips for tackling a dirty garage with love and without too much trauma, especially if you work from home, and you’ve let it go for too long.

Just get started!

See, I didn’t really plan on doing it, but I had some extra hours on Sunday. Without even intending to, I found myself dragging a ton of stuff out to the driveway, dusting and scrubbing it down, sweeping the garage floors (even the corners), throwing things out, and putting everything back in its place.

Deep cleaning is a little gift I give myself (and the house) when I have unconstructed time — usually a holiday weekend. This weekend it was the Fourth of July. It fell on a Saturday, and Sunday was, well, either a recovery day (you know who you are) or a bonus day. Even though I had a little bit to drink; and stayed up too late watching my kid blow things up; and ate one or two ridiculously sweet blondies, I was up and ready for church by 8:00. When I got home, I realized I had a full day with NOTHING TO DO.

Sometimes, on these rare unconstructed days, I paint, or sew, or read, or write all day long. But this past Sunday I cleaned the garage.

Now, I don’t exactly hate cleaning the garage. I might even go so far as to say I enjoy it, for it’s an act that requires no forethought; you just need to start. It’s work that perfectly “FLOWs,” beginning with a small act, like putting away a screwdriver, or washing the dog crate pillow. Magically, without any motivation on my part, I wind up going whole hog, cleaning and organizing everything. It’s the “If You Give A Mouse a Cookie” syndrome, where you get caught up in the adventure of completing unforeseen tasks, one right after another.

On Sunday it started with cleaning up the fireworks debris in the street. I enlisted the boys’ help of course. Then, one thing led to another and, viola, a clean garage!

At the end of the day (if you’ve ever had a day like this, you know what I mean) you experience the results, good and bad. Let me explain.

Three Cool Things About Cleaning the Garage:

It doesn’t take a master plan.

Are you one of those people who writes “Clean the Garage” on your calendar? If you are, then you probably even gather supplies, extra organizational bins, cleaning tools, maybe even some new shelving, etc. But if you’re a reluctant garage cleaner (like me), then it’s always a happy surprise when the day is done and you’ve spent it getting the garage in ship shape. You find yourself working with what you’ve got and it’s good enough.

You get to organize all your stuff. There are two kinds of people in the world; Those who love to organize stuff, and those who’d just as soon toss everything in one pile and sort things out later. I’m of the former group.

  • I found stuff, forgotten little things left here and there in random spots by various family members.
  • I gathered a pile of deflated balls from soccer and volleyball seasons past.
  • I discovered a use for a strong peg holder that had been in an awkward spot on a wall for over a decade.
  • I made a pile of things to toss and things to take to the Goodwill. I even found some good stuff to sell in our local Facebook swap page.
  • I pulled several toxic products off the shelves to take to a recycling center.
  • I even surveyed the tool chest and decided that it wouldn’t bee too big a job to organize screws, Dremel bits, and screwdrivers into drawers. I even designated on drawer for my son’s skateboard hardware and tools. He’ll love that, although he may not actually put things away, since he’s 14.

Clean dog, clean garage. Now that everything is clean and easy-to-locate, I can now find things. This Eureka moment may even set off a flurry of projects I’ve been meaning to fix around the house. Sooner better than later. Just remember; YOU can find things, but everyone else in the house may wonder where you put everything. Labeling the newly sorted drawers and boxes is a nice idea.

You get to clean all your stuff.

You bring it out to your driveway, fill buckets with cleaning solutions and put a shine on the sawhorses, and garden tools, and bicycles. This is one of the most satisfying parts of the job, removing cobwebs and dust from old paint jars, sports equipment and tool chests. Now you can actually touch your stuff without getting dirty. Lovely.

You have new spaces and new vision.

The garage is where many of us enter the house. If the garage is a shambles, it’s really hard to enjoy your indoor living space, even if it’s as clean and tidy as an army barracks, and as welcoming as any interior you’ve ever pinned. I told you about the new skateboard drawer. Now here’s my real pipedream: I can never clean the garage without envisioning a new garage floor and a new paintjob. I picture everything up off the floor, from bicycles to reloading supplies, to scrap lumber, which I have difficulty understanding why we keep until, as soon as I discard an 8-ft 2 x 4, I suddenly need one; so I bite the impulse to toss it, and put it back in the corner.

Sandy's Clean Garage Floors in AustinSomeday, I want one of those speckled, stain resistant, washable epoxy jobs on the floor. I’d say goodbye to the permanent marks left by the tempura paints my kids spilled at an easel when they were much younger, and the worn rounded edge from my sons’ skateboarding tricks on the one cement ledge inside the garage. Ahh, I can dream.

The only new thing that came from this fastidious flurry of cleanliness was a new crate bed for my beloved Rosie. She totally deserves it, for being such a good and faithful guardian.

And now for some tips on how to feel great after your day of hard work…

The Healthy Way To Clean Your Garage

While I can’t get super excited about cleaning the garage, I do feel passionate about staying healthy while you’re doing it. Your body takes the wear and tear of a full day of some pretty heavy physical labor.

For example, while my garage looked terrific (well, better) at the end of the day, my shoes, socks and feet were soggy, my back ached, my lungs were filled with dust, I had cobwebs in my hair, and my finger was pinched from lifting identical metal grids and setting them down, back to back, in a not-so-identical way. Ouch!

Some of the following tips are things I did that worked. But some are words of caution brought on by my oversight.

Use nontoxic cleaning supplies:

Thieves™ in a bucket of water is better for your eyes, hands, lungs and skin than anything I’ve ever used. If you are a frequent cleaner of things around the house, I highly recommend this stuff. I didn’t believe until I tried this stuff.

Be safe and smart when lifting and climbing:

I got a pretty good scare as I lifted some heavy folding chairs above my head while standing on the third ladder rung. I didn’t fall, but after regaining my balance, I admitted I was no spring chicken anymore. It only takes one small slip to change your life forever. Even if you’re young and in perfectly good health, get a spotter for high-up jobs; and at least make sure someone else is home if you’re doing anything even remotely dangerous. Farmers can testify to this. They always say, “It was stupid… everyone knows you don’t [fill in the blank].” And yet they did – and lost fingers, legs, suffered brain injuries, or were killed. Don’t risk your life for your garage. Just sayin’.

Tend to those sore muscles:

sore muscles after garage cleaningI’m not sure why it is, but I can work out at the gym for hours every week, and still, when I do yard work or housecleaning, my muscles are so sore afterward. I massaged some Aroma Seize™ and Deep Relief™ on my shoulders and neck, and rested all evening.

A nice hot bath is also soothing after bending, lifting and reaching, etc.

Watch out for stinging insects:

The mud dauber nests were too high up to remove. They’re just part of the scenery for now. As annoying as the flying insects are, going in and out of the garage as if they owned the place; it’s the spiders and scorpions you have to watch out for. (In Texas, all the stinging, prickly stuff hugs the ground.) I managed to spot the scorpion curled under a bag of potting soil, but I never saw the spider that stung me behind my right knee. The itching and swelling began suddenly, so I went in search of some Lavender. It eased the itching immediately, and I’ve been re-applying it regularly for the past couple of days. I’m not sure spiders avoid bug sprays (either over the counter or one of the excellent home-made insect repellent essential oil blends), but the mosquitos and chiggers do.

Protect your lungs and membranes from dust and other contaminants:

I always forget how dust affects me until it’s too late. I’m still feeling that tightness in my throat when I swallow (two days later), and I know it’s from exposure to dust and cobwebs. Remember that any powdered substance will irritate your nasal membranes and your internal organs and tissues. Sweeping up sawdust, handling old ant poison powders (even with gloves), and general disturbance of dust and dirt; is the height of nasty to your lungs and eyes. The next time I’m at the store I’m picking up some dust masks to have on hand for projects like this.

lavender infused neti pot saltsIf you make the same mistake of NOT wearing a dust mask, you can always flush your sinuses with some warm salt water infused with Lavender (there it is again) and/or Neroli essential oils, poured through a Neti pot for instant relief.

Enjoy your clean garage while it lasts.

Now that the garage is clean, I actually enjoy the trip from the door to the car. I’m sure there are plenty of other dirty jobs that are worth the sore muscles to accomplish, but I’m enjoying the moment this week.

Maybe I’ll tackle the attic next Labor Day weekend.

Young Living’s Integrity Problem

Young Living’s Integrity Problem

Missing Blue Tansy, worth the wait...I want to work with a company that tells me the truth.

Young Living’s business model means I’m sharing it with people I know and like, people who trust me. I’ve been using Young Living Essential Oils for a year now, and I’m really thankful it doesn’t resort to tricks to keep its customers and members satisfied. It relies instead on the truth, even if it’s hard to swallow sometimes.

In the past year, we’ve been out of Valor and Peace and Calming due to “supply shortage.” For two years in a row, the Blue Tansy harvest was spoiled by heavy rainfall. So what does that mean to lovers of that Blue Tansy and the blends containing it? It means we wait until the next harvest and use something different in the meantime.

I come from a farming background, where I’ve learned that when it’s time, it’s time. Especially at harvest time. In Nebraska, where my family has farmed for generations, it doesn’t matter how much you’ve been looking forward to that Cornhuster football game; if the crops are ready to bring in, you’re up and out there in the field. That’s just the way it is. My uncles have missed a lot of sports events at harvest time. Nebraska football and Nebraska farming don’t always go together. And you see the results in the people there. Nebraskans are realistic, faithful, hardworking, and accepting. Interesting how that works.

Think of it like a pregnancy. When baby’s ready, but you’re not, too bad. You change your plans. Nature has a way of holding all the cards, which is both reassuring and frustrating. I love how when you are committed to working with nature, and not against it, you are forced to find patience, faith, and acceptance. I think it might be God’s way of helping us with those qualities. quite frankly, I like that Young Living encourages its members to adopt these qualities right along with the corporation. We’re in it together.

Instead of tweaking a formula known to work, they embrace transparency and share the truth about the harvest. It’s no secret, anyway. Rain is rain. Sorry if you were counting on Valor, but that fact is, you need Blue tansy to make it. It is what it is. Young Living is not going to substitute an essential oil for something else just to fulfill orders. Yes, it’s frustrating, but it’s liberating, too.

Then you will know the truth and the truth will set you free. John 8:32

A lot of companies accommodate the market and their shareholders to a fault. While I understand how and why that happens, that doesn’t mean I like it. Do you ever wonder how can a company can skim, cut corners, and search for the lowest common denominator; and still stay in business? Many times it can’t, unless it’s a consumable that people want and need, and the brand is strong.

Consumers grow more savvy and informed every day. Small competitors, happy with a smaller market, use the ubiquitous digital media and product evangelists to spring up and nip into industry giants’ markets. As a consumer, I admit I like the trend. As a marketer, I’m fascinated by certain small companies’ growth and evolution.

Don’t let me down gradually.

Do you ever notice when you begin to love a product, you become a regular buyer; you stop comparing brands and prices because you landed on “the one you like;” you replace the generic name of the product with your favorite brand’s name; and you even tell your friends about it.

Little white lies corporations tell
A dishonest business man

And then… you start noticing little differences in quality. The material is a tiny bit thinner, or the bottle seems smaller, or the life of the product is a little shorter… you think, but you can’t quite be sure. At the same time, the product is becoming more popular; it’s not the best-kept secret anymore. “What’s happening?” you wonder. Did the company stop testing, or scale back on quality control? Did they find a cheaper vendor, or are they cutting corners to meed demand? Something’s not right, and usually that something is accompanied by higher prices.

Eventually, that purchase you never questioned before does’t hold the same allure. If another , more attractive product comes along, you would try it. That’s what happens when a company either grows too fast and wants to make too many people happy, and/or forgets its loyal customers. Maybe the company just decided it was worth it to lower their original standards to serve more people. Or sells to a giant in the industry.

As the primary consumer of a busy household, I’ve resigned myself to this pattern many times. Sometimes consumers have no choice, as is the case with the shrinking quantity of tissue paper on a roll over the last 20 years. (What’s up with that industry trend, anyway?) Sometimes your favorite thing just vanishes overnight, like Illuminations Candles. (Loved those.) Sometimes the change is sudden, and the customer just deals with it, as in Netflix’s membership/pricing terms in 2011 (I stayed.)

What’s worse is when the change or decrease is slight and disappointing, or minor, and “hidden.”

Last Saturday I travelled with my friend Suzi to a Young Living Essential Oils event. We made a pitstop midway between Austin and San Antonio, where I grabbed a cup of yogurt. (The one that starts with a “Ch.”) I opened it, and saw maybe a third cup of yogurt in what used to be a good half cup, in a “5.2 oz.” container. The plastic cup was the same size, but it was literally half full. I wondered if maybe a machine in the factory malfunctioned, or the cup slipped past the weight test. Who knows? It tasted fine, but I was not dazzled when I peeled back the lid.

Unfortunately, I became a little suspicious of the integrity of the company. The food itself wasn’t the disappointment; it was the behind-the scenes decision to just skim a little off the top, as if a loyal customer wouldn’t notice.

Regarding sharing the truth about supply, ripping off the bandaid is always the better option.

No valor? Try this instead.I trust YL oils because of their “Seed to Seal” promise. Rock solid testing and quality controls ensure the best product every time. If they are out of an ingredient in a blend, Young Living isn’t going to ship me some second-rate substitute just to fulfill the order. Instead, they explain why they won’t let me place the order in the first place, then they support me with other options.

I can handle that. Yeah, I’m sad I can’t get Valor. (My kid has great days when he puts some on his feet in the morning, but, oh, well.) We can try other oils instead. at least I know for certain their purity will never be compromised. Makes me feel more confident in the products they have already shipped to me. One of those little perks of Young Living integrity… I can trust the company.

As Cherie Ross said this weekend at her event in San Antonio, when the company is out of something, look at it as an opportunity to try a different oil or combination of oils… “Enjoy the detour,” she advised, then she went on to share the profound benefits of Stress Away, which like every last one of Young Living Essential Oils means it only include 100% pure therapeutic grade oil.

Young Living, Nature’s Remedies, and God’s Awesome Creation

Young Living, Nature’s Remedies, and God’s Awesome Creation

The chemistry of Essential Oils and nature's remediesThe cover of this book says it all. God’s amazing grace includes nature. His most prized creations (you and me, of course, but all the flora and fauna, too) can’t be duplicated in a lab. No way, no how.

Even all the nifty antibiotics and  lifestyle drugs these days — the wonder products of pharmaceutical companies — can’t match the astounding complexity and therapuetic power of a simple drop of the commonest-of-common, lavender essential oil.

Now I’ve never really thought too hard about chemistry. I passed it in high school; to mix things up, and for a bit of relief from consuming novels, I took astronomy, physics and calculus in college, even though I was an English major. After a long time away from all things associated with the study of matter, I tend to think of chemistry in the same realm with mad scientists in labs, and meth labs in campers, a la Breaking Bad.

Now, wonder of wonders, I’m newly in love… with matter! Particularly the chemical  stories and vignettes described in the book. Like, why does a bee get drunk on plant nectar and woozily dance through the air — even when there’s no female in sight to impress. Would you like to know why he does that? There are tons of stories about nature’s remedies like this inside. I highly recommend this.

Whether you believe God has a master plan or not, your jaw will drop when you discover the complexity and awesome design in creation.
